A visual Pic of the 10 Essentials
Let's Talk about the ten essentials on hikes and climbs.  How many times do we run into the situation in which a hiker or climber is lost that they do not have the means to find their way to civilization?  All the time!  I know here in the Pacific Northwest it happens at least a couple of time throughout the season, and sometimes leads to their death.  However, these deaths are so unnecessary if they had the proper equipment, also known as the ten essentials.

What are the 10 Essentials

The ten essentials are an easy list to remember.  They can be found on most hiking and mountaineering websites, so there is no excuse for not finding them.  Here is the list:

  1. Navigation (Map, Compass, and GPS)
  2. Sunglasses and Sunscreen (you may even need this during the winter)
  3. Extra clothing
  4. Flashlight
  5. First aid
  6. Fire (Fire Starter)
  7. Repair kit
  8. Extra food
  9. Hydration (H2O)
  10. Emergency Shelter

This list answers a couple of questions according to the book mountaineering freedom of the hills,  which should be part of any hikers or backpacker library.  The list explains first that you could spend over 24 hours in the bush.  Second, you will be prepared to respond to an emergency such as helping find a small child, fellow hiker or administer basic first aid if necessary.

EXPANDING ON THE LIST

Now depending on what you are doing, you may have to develop on this list, this is just the bare bones minimum.  For example, if you are on the pacific crest trail, it may be a great idea that you bring a good pair of hiking poles or an ice ax if you are going to be traveling in the Sisters, Oregon area.  Alternatively, if you are going on a multi-day hike, you may need to brink a small stove.
In all, you need the items on this list.  I have been in situations in the past that I have been glad to have brought the items I did.  It even saved someone's life because I could stay out in the bush and assisted someone in finding their list 8-year-old. All because I had all the proper gear and supplies. It all our responsibility if we spend any time in our wildlands.
